Annonce

Sub-TeraHertz (sub-THz) and Terahertz (THz) technologies, which are often referred as beyond-5G communication, are today attracting a great interest from both academia and industry. The transmission of information in the spectrum above 90GHz, up to 300GHz allows the use of huge bandwidths, from ones to tens of GHz. As the millimeter-wave communication systems will become mature with the emergence of 5G technologies, the focus of the research activities is naturally moving to the sub-THz range. The continuous increase in wireless capacity and thus makes the bandwidth requirements always more ambitious. In particular, ultra large bandwidths can be used for terabit-per-second (Tb/s) short-range wireless communications, or ultra-high capacity backhaul or kiosk applications.

Today, the sub-THz/THz techniques are far from the maturity achieved in microwave, millimeter-wave, and photonics. The key issue is that such systems cannot be implemented with existing technology especially when it comes to integrated devices. First concern is the design of high-performance reasonable-cost integrated circuits that include powerful sub?THz/THz sources, high-gain antennas and sensitive sub-THz detectors.

In addition to those hardware considerations, the characterization and modelling of the PHY-layer components, including the propagation channel (line-of-sight, obstructed line-of-sight, and multi-paths propagation models), RF performance/constraints and antennas as well as network topologies are of primary importance to assess and optimize the investigated sub-THz/THz communication systems.

The goal of this GDR ISIS day is to share the recent progress made in the emerging sub-THz/THz communication domain, relying on innovative transmission and detection techniques. We propose a day split into two parts. First invited speakers will be invited to give an overview of challenges and recent progress in the field of sub-THz/THz spectrum regulation, beyond-5G use cases definition, antenna design, detectors, channel propagation modeling, signal processing, etc.
