Postdoctoral Researcher Position
Job Title: Postdoctoral Researcher in Computer Vision and Robotics
Context:
We offer a postdoc position in Computer Vision or/and Robotics to propose an approach for 3D reconstruction, scene mapping, and surface quality assessment. The context of this work is the nationally funded PARME project. The project aims to develop advanced robotic solutions based on the ARU robot (https://nimbleone.io/) for maintenance operations in complex access areas, with a particular focus on surface preparation and painting. Applications are brought in by the two major industrial players, Naval Group for vessel construction and EDF for dam maintenance. Our team will work on developing and integrating algorithms on the robot to ensure accurate 3D mapping, localization, and surface quality assessment. Other academic partners have expertise in robotics and industrial painting, while the industrial partners develop robots and integrate painting solutions.
While addressing the computer vision aspects of the project, a particular focus will be on the quality of the reconstruction. We will use quantitative metrics to identify poorly reconstructed regions of the 3D model and guide the scene’s 3D acquisition (next-best view) to ensure the final model’s completeness and quality. This is essential to improve the robot’s ability to navigate and perform tasks in complex environments.
The candidate is expected to implement solutions and publish the theoretical contributions. She or he will have the opportunity to work closely with industry partners and apply their research in real-world applications, contributing to the global scope of the project.
Duration: 1 year (extension to a 2nd year possible)
Responsibilities:
- Conduct computer vision and robotics research, focusing on 3D reconstruction, localization, and object recognition.
- Develop and implement algorithms for 3D mapping and surface quality assessment.
- Collaborate with project partners to integrate and test solutions in real-world environments.
- Publish research findings in major international conferences and journals.
- Manage project tasks and coordinate with the research team.
Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Computer Vision, Robotics, or a related field.
- Strong background in computer vision and robotics.
- Experience with deep learning algorithms for object segmentation/recognition is also welcome.
- Proficiency in C++ and Python.
- Proven track record of publications in related fields.
- Ability to manage projects and work autonomously.
- Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
