Joint Research between a surgical robotics startup and the LIRMM Laboratory

About the Position
We are a fast-growing and succesfull start-up in surgical robotics with a mission to help surgeons better treat patients and improve the lives of a large number of people affected by debilitating disease. In a collaboration with the LIRMM robotics laboratory, we are seeking an exceptional PhD candidate for
an innovative research position combining industrial innovation and academic excellence.
This position represents a unique opportunity to work in both startup and academic environments, with joint supervision from our medical robotics startup and the renowned LIRMM (Laboratory of Informatics, Robotics, and Microelectronics of Montpellier) robotics research team. The candidate will further collaborate with retinal surgeons, notably from the CHU Saint-Etienne

Research Project Description
This PhD project focuses on developing advanced artificial intelligence algorithms that leverage both pre-operative and per-operative (intraoperative) data to create real-time feedback systems and performance metrics for surgeons performing robotic retinal procedures. The research aims to create intelligent systems that can enhance surgical decision-making, improve training methodologies, and ultimately lead to better patient outcomes.

Key Research Areas
– Development of machine learning models for analyzing multimodal surgical data (imaging, tool movements, procedure phases)
– Creation of real-time performance metrics to provide meaningful feedback during surgical procedures
– Design of predictive algorithms to identify potential complications or optimal approaches
– Integration of pre-operative planning data with intraoperative observations
– Development of surgeon-centric visualization techniques for feedback delivery
– Validation of AI recommendations against expert surgical knowledge and outcomes

Dual Research Environment
The PhD candidate will benefit from:
– Startup Environment: Direct exposure to clinical challenges, access to surgical datasets, interaction with surgeons, and focus on translational research
– LIRMM Laboratory: World-class academic mentorship, advanced computing resources, collaboration with robotics experts, and publishing opportunities
Required Qualifications
– Master’s degree in Computer Science, AI, Data Science, or related field
– Strong foundation in machine learning and artificial intelligence algorithms
– Programming proficiency in Python and relevant AI frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow)
– Understanding of data visualization techniques and human-computer interaction
– Excellent academic record with demonstrated research capabilities
– Strong communication skills in English (French is a plus)
Desired Skills
– Background in surgical data analysis or medical informatics
– Experience with time-series analysis and real-time data processing
– Familiarity with medical imaging techniques and processing
– Understanding of human factors in medical device design
– Experience with regulatory considerations for AI in healthcare

What We Offer
– Full financial support for 3 years of doctoral research
– Competitive salary
– Access to unique surgical datasets and state-of-the-art robotic platforms
– Mentorship from both industry leaders and academic researchers
– Opportunities for clinical collaboration and surgical observation
– International conference participation and publication support
– Potential for patent development and technology commercialization
– Career development at the intersection of academia and medical technology industry
