MSc internship – Ultrasound elastography: leveraging physiological signals to improve stiffness measurement

Laboratory: ImViA (Imaging and Artificial Vision, UR 7535), Université Bourgogne Europe, Dijon, France

Partner: a French medical device company

Duration: 5 to 6 months, starting February-March 2027

Stipend: according to French regulations

Follow-up: possible industrial PhD (CIFRE) with the partner company

Supervisor: Yannick Benezeth (https://sites.google.com/view/ybenezeth/)

Context. Ultrasound elastography measures tissue stiffness non-invasively and is widely used to assess health. New acquisition modes no longer provide a single value but a time series of measurements. These series are affected by physiological phenomena, in particular breathing and cardiac activity, which are currently treated as sources of variability.

Goal. The internship aims to treat these physiological components as useful information, to make the measurement more reliable and faster.

Tasks.

  • Literature review on elastography and physiological signal estimation.
  • Exploration and analysis of time series from real acquisitions.
  • Estimation of the respiratory and cardiac signals from the available raw signals.
  • Modelling the influence of these signals on the measurement and assessing the benefit for its reliability and duration.
  • Depending on progress, first deep learning approaches.
  • Possible participation in acquisitions with reference sensors.

Profile. MSc or final-year engineering student in signal processing, data science, biomedical engineering or a related field. Good Python skills, interest in physiological signals and medical imaging, a background in deep learning is a plus.

How to apply. Send a CV, transcripts and a cover letter to yannick.benezeth@ube.fr before Nov 1st 2026.
