[Postdoc] High-Altitude Surveillance using Passive Radar

Context :
With the rapid development of aerospace technologies, very high altitude (VHA) has become a growing focus of competition, both for its operational advantages and the sovereignty challenges it presents. Defining the atmospheric layer between 20 and 100 kilometers in altitude, VHA marks the transition from the traditional air environment to extra-atmospheric space. Two main types of objects are expected to operate in this region: High Altitude Permanent Systems (HAPS), suited for intelligence or telecommunications missions (stratospheric balloons, static airships); and hypersonic objects, designed to reach deep targets (ballistic or cruise missiles, gliders).

In this context, the goal of the SHERPA (Surveillance Haute Elevation par Radar PAssif) project, funded by the French Defense Innovation Agency (AID), is to provide methodological and experimental contributions to the study and development of a detection and tracking system for a multistatic passive radar dedicated to monitoring atmospheric and exo-atmospheric space using GNSS signals. The aim is to evaluate the feasibility of deploying systems embedded on stratospheric balloons, using GNSS signals as signals of opportunity. The estimation and detection methods studied will be multi-receiver, multi-frequency, and multi-constellation. Additionally, to track objects over time, precise and interference-robust receiver positioning will be required. In addition to the theoretical study, the project also involves implementing a feasibility study for this type of radar, including recording I&Q data on a network of GNSS receivers (at least two), with data processed offline in MATLAB using the methods developed during the study.
