[PostDoc] Postdoctoral Positions in Communication Theory of Optical Fiber, at Telecom Paris

27 Juin 2025

Catégorie : Postes Post-doctorant ;

Background

Optical fiber forms the backbone of the communication systems. The exponential increase in data
traffic is putting an escalating pressure on fiber-optic networks. Optical fiber is a nonlinear medium
because its properties change with the signal intensity. It is well known that the fiber nonlinearity limits
the achievable information rates of the conventional transmission methods in optical communication.
The problem of efficient communication over optical fiber channels is open, because the channels are
governed by complex models that go beyond the standard models in communications.

The objective of this research project is to establish the information-theoretic limits in optical fiber,
and to develop communication algorithms that approach these limits. The project uses the nonlinear
Fourier transforms and neural networks to design tranceivers for the nonlinear optical fiber.
The project is funded by an ERC Starting Grant from the European Research Council (ERC).

Description of the positions

Two postdoctoral fellows will be recruited at Telecom Paris, Institut Polytechnique de Paris, Palaiseau,
France. The positions can commence immediately. The positions are nominally for two years, with a
performance review at the end of the first year. The successful candidates will be employed on a fulltime basis with a competitive salary in accordance with the Collective Agreement at Telecom Paris (the
salary could be negotiated depending on the qualifications of the candidate, on the basis of the ERC
Grant). The research will be carried out in collaboration with other researchers working on information
theory, signal processing and machine learning for communications.
As an applicant, your responsibilities include pursuing and developing your own ideas for solving
research problems, and communicating the results. Researchers are supervised by Mansoor Yousefi,
and will benefit from collaboration with world experts in optical communication in academia and industry.

Eligibility and qualifications

We are seeking intellectually-curious and mathematically-sophisticated candidates who are passionate
about fundamental research. Background in information and communication theory, signal processing,
neural networks or physical applied mathematics (particularly in nonlinear dynamical systems) is desired. Knowledge in optical fiber is helpful, but not required. The project does not involve experimental
work.
Applicants with degrees in Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or equivalent, are
especially encouraged to apply.

Application procedure

Applications should include i) a cover letter, ii) complete CV, including the publication list, (iii) names
and contact information of two references who will provide recommendation letters, and iv) two representative papers.

Applications and questions should be emailed to Mansoor Yousefi (yousefi@telecom-paris.fr). The
selection is based on an interview.
