European Wireless (EW) is a key venue for European and worldwide researchers to become acquainted with the latest trends in wireless communications and networking. This 30th edition of EW will be held in Sophia-Antipolis, France, October 27-29, 2025, and will feature special sessions on hot topics in telecommunications, including a special session on Tactile Internet.https://ew2025.european-wireless.org/special-sessions

SCOPE OF THE SPECIAL SESSION ON TACTILE INTERNET

The sense of touch plays a crucial role in our interaction with the physical world, allowing us to grasp objects, perceive textures, and manipulate our surroundings with dexterity. While the Internet has been designed for carrying best effort, audio and video data, haptic communications complement these data by adding the sense of touch for a complete immersive experience, leading to the concept of Tactile Internet (TI). TI is expected to support diverse use cases, such as bilateral teleoperation with haptic feedback, immersive virtual reality, skill transfer and remote learning from demonstration. The 5G and beyond network design for TI poses multiple challenges. First, the multimodal nature of the traffic, with interconnected audio, video, haptic and context data subflows, imposes stringent and simultaneous requirements on throughput, delay, jitter and reliability. Second, TI is expected to not only generate a massive amount of data but also a high packet rate, generating stress on the network and increasing its energy consumption. And third, edge intelligence and in-network processing are needed to process, compress, augment data and compensate for losses and delays, posing challenges on the network architecture and management. Recent research, such as that performed within the Horizon Europe MSCA Doctoral Network TOAST, leverages the advances in haptic coding, Artificial Intelligence (AI), joint design of communication and control and semantic communications for addressing these challenges.

The objective of this special session is to gather experts in the related fields to discuss and propose solutions for an efficient handling of TI in 6G networks.
